Pistacia vera L. as natural source against antimicrobial and antiviral resistance
Research is focusing on developing new therapeutics to combat antimicrobial and antiviral resistance. Pistachio nuts, rich in protein, fiber, fatty acids, minerals, vitamins, and phytochemicals, have antimicrobial and antiviral potential. Studies show Staphylococcus aureus is the most susceptible bacteria, while zeaxanthin affects HSV-1 attachment penetration and viral DNA synthesis. Pistachio extracts could be used for topical treatment of S. aureus skin and ocular herpes infections.
